PATTAYA, Thailand – This week on the Adult Site Broker Talk podcast, the show features part two of the conversation with FSC Policy Director, documentary filmmaker and independent journalist Mike Stabile.
In addition to his work with FSC, Stabile is the founder of Polari Media, a media strategy firm that works with businesses in the adult industry, and co-founder of SWR Data, a market research company focused on the creator economy.
Last week, in part one of their conversation, show host Bruce the adult site broker said the focus of the discussion was to offer “a good rundown of the latest in the War on Porn.” This week, the pair delve further into one of the dominant trends in American regulation of adult media.
“In part two of our interview Mike and I dig more into the different age verification laws and try to look to the future,” Bruce said.
“I think that what people really don’t like about them is that they’re ineffective,” Stabile said of the current spate of age verification laws during part two of the interview. “Meaning, if I am an adult site and I have this type of content and suddenly people aren’t coming to my site because I’ve got age verification, but they’re going to the pirate site that is located out of India or the Czech Republic or Netherlands or whatever else, because that’s the next one down on Google, I’m losing money. People are going to pirated content and we’re not protecting kids. So, people are trying to figure out like, ‘Hey, is there a system we can make that like, if it’s going to apply to us, has it applied to these other people as well?’”
Stabile added that in “an ideal world, what we would get is probably a bill that was maybe a device-level bill…where the verification happens on the device.”
“That’s starting to happen,” Stabile said. “I think in the UK, Apple agreed to verify on device and to send that signal to websites. Boom – Pornhub is available to people with an iPhone again.”
