Look out OnlyFans, it sounds like Twitter is planning to eat (at least part of) your lunch.
During its Analyst Day event, Twitter revealed a paid subscription service it has been working on for a while now. They’re calling the service “Super Follow,” and subscribers will pay $4.99 to gain access to exclusive content and popular creators on the platform.
This means Twitter stars with big followings will have an opportunity to directly monetize their audience, similar to sites like Patreon, YouTube and OnlyFans. They can do this by offering special subscriber-only tweets, access to a newsletter, supporter badges or access to a special community group.
It’s unknown at this early stage however if the company will place any restrictions on adult creators wanting to use Super Follow, however no such restrictions were mentioned at the Analyst Day event.
In addition to the new planned “Super Follow” feature, Twitter also announced plans for Communities which will operate similar to Facebook groups.
Of possible concern to the adult industry, Twitter also announced a new feature called “Safety Mode” that will block or mute accounts it deems to be abusing its rules. As is common with these kinds of things, Twitter hasn’t provided a lot of detail about how users might find themselves included in those blocked by the new feature.
Twitter has struggled in recent years to deal with abusive content and aggressive trolls, and Safety Mode appears to be an attempt to improve the user experience by silencing disruptive users. In a slide deck offered during the Analyst Day event, the company prioritized “making sure conversations are safe from abuse and harassment,” which of course could also benefit sex workers who often are targets for abusive behavior online.
No word yet exactly when these features could be made available.
