Press Release Basics for Newbies

Publicity and marketing go hand-in-hand. They are essentially one and the same. The first obstacle that newbies and do-it-yourselfers must navigate is the treacherous world of traffic and marketing. This can be a difficult task for most newbies who have little or no funds to invest in marketing. Rather, they rely on tried and true methods of inexpensive marketing techniques such as link exchange, TGPs, and fledgling affiliate programs that can’t compete with the big boys. But there exists a form of publicity and marketing that should not be overlooked: the press release.Why send out press releases?

There are several solid reasons to send out press releases. First of all, it’s completely free. The only cost might be 20 minutes of your time to write a 200 – 300 word article. Secondly, news driven web sites will almost always publish a quality press release. Just like any other adult website, news websites are always starving for new content. Press releases are a decent source of traffic, but you will have the best results by promoting your webmaster related projects via press release as webmasters tend to surf the net for news about their industry much more so than porn surfers. It is important to get your name out there. Lastly, sending out a press release is much better than sending out a webmaster related spam. Most webmasters toss out 99-percent of spam or email advertisements, whereas a press release published on a news web site comes across as a more credible news item.

When do I send my press release?

If you have made any significant changes to any of your sites or if you have a new website, product, or event to announce, then you should consider sending out a press release. Another good time to send out a press release is when you want to announce simple items or sales promotions such as a special holiday promotion. Press releases should be sent out no less than three – four days ahead of the event you would like to promote.

How to write a press release

The first rule of thumb for writing a press release is to write it so that it does not sound like a blatant advertisement. Your press release should be written with lots of information so that it comes across more like a news item. Leave out sales pitches and sensational adjectives and claims such as “Highest Converting” or “You will make money guaranteed.” News websites will not publish a sales pitch. The information in the release will sell itself. Include the date of your release and a headline. The headline should be short and simple. For example, let’s say you are sending out a release to announce a new partnership program for your site suzyxxxamateur.com, a good headline might be “Suzyxxxamateur.com Announces New Partnership Program.” Be sure to mention important information in your release and remember the basics of writing: Who? What? When? Why? Where? How?

Write your release using a word processor such as MS Word and spell check your release before you send it out. You do not have to be an experienced writer to produce a good press release. Use the tools at your disposal, most word processors come with a handy thesaurus. Try to make your press release a minimum of 200 – 300 words. A one paragraph release isn’t going to make the grade. Consider including artwork with your release. Send a screen shot of the site you are promoting or a head shot if you are promoting a web girl. Remember that almost anything you do can be news. Write it up and send it out.

Who do I send it to?

Do some surfing and find the news or resource sites that would best target your release. Usually the best adult news sites to submit to are the sites you visit most yourself.

Why didn’t my press release get published?

There are several reasons why your press release may not have been published. If your release is poorly written or if you did not bother to correct any spelling or grammatical errors, chances are good that it will not get published. Your release may also be passed over if the subject is irrelevant in the eyes of news website editors. For example “Suzyxxxamateur.com web cam show tonight at 7pm” will probably not get published. Your release may not be published if it sounds too much like a spam or blatant advertisement and lastly, your release may be overlooked if there happens to be more important news on the day you submit it.

Do I actually get any traffic or publicity?

Yes, you will get some traffic from your release. Granted it is not the kind of volume of traffic needed to generate any significant surfer sales but for webmaster related products, press releases are a great source to brand your product and to generate interest among webmasters for your webmaster related products.

When it comes to marketing yourself or your products, it’s all about publicity and press releases offer an avenue to the best possible kind of publicity there is. Free publicity cannot be knocked, there are no downsides to free publicity and press releases are one vehicle you can use to your marketing advantage.
