LAS VEGAS — Award-nominated performer and creator Nina Nova is offering an unusually candid look at the adult industry, sexual culture and the politics of pleasure in Episode 23 of Humanizing SEX, hosted by licensed professional counselor and sex therapist Yub Kim.
In the hour-long conversation, Nova reflects on her unusual path from sexual-health and reproductive-rights policy and organizing work into adult entertainment, and how working inside the industry has complicated, challenged and ultimately reshaped many of the ideas she once held about sexuality, empowerment and liberation.
“I’ve always identified with the pursuit of pleasure and the idea that pleasure is power,” Nova says during the episode. “But now I get to do it a little bit differently.”
The conversation moves well beyond the conventional performer interview. Nova discusses talent agencies and gatekeeping within porn, performer autonomy, the economics of creator platforms, performer safety, porn and media literacy, sexual autonomy, and the cultural influence of adult media.
One of her central arguments is that porn does not merely reflect society’s attitudes toward sexuality; it helps shape them.
“What we allow in porn, what we normalize in the industry of porn, impacts our entire society,” Nova explains. “It creates a societal undertone of what is allowed and what is permissible.”
That perspective informs Nova’s next creative chapter: The Pleasure Paradox, a forthcoming SFW media project that will explore sexuality, pleasure, power, relationships, embodiment and the cultural contradictions surrounding sex.
Nova describes the project as an opportunity to bring together the different parts of her professional life: sexual-health advocacy, adult entertainment, media literacy and her experience navigating the adult industry as an independent creator.
“I want to start talking about pleasure as power and pleasure as political and pleasure without permission,” she says. “I want to start talking about how we reclaim our sexual identities and our sexual bodies and lives.”
The conversation also addresses the industry’s changing economic landscape and the growing ability of performers to build independent businesses and audiences outside traditional studio and talent agency structures. Nova, who has remained predominantly self-booked throughout her career, argues that creator-owned models can give performers greater control over their work, relationships and professional boundaries.
“I think that is what is going to be the thing that buckles the agency system,” Nova says of the growing shift toward creator-controlled media.
The result is a conversation that neither simply celebrates nor condemns pornography. Instead, Nova examines the contradictions of working inside an industry that can simultaneously provide sexual autonomy and reproduce many of the same exploitative structures found elsewhere.
That tension is at the heart of The Pleasure Paradox.
“I think there’s this opportunity right now to use pleasure as a starting point to get us on more of the same page and to build safer communities,” Nova says. “I think sex workers can teach us a lot.”
