Newbie Basics

Posted On 16 Dec 2000

“Free sites also leave you far more legally vulnerable than you should want to be.”I receive a ton of email in which I am constantly asked the same “newbie” questions: “How do I get into this business, what kind of site should I build, and how much money can I REALLY make in this business?” This article will help to answer those questions, and get you started along the right track.

Some of these answers may not be what you expect, and some of them may not be what you would have heard even a year ago, but in this ever-changing business, change is the only constant…

How Do I Get Into This Business?
Getting into the adult Internet business is easy. Succeeding in it is not. When I refer to success, what I mean is “making enough money to live comfortably on.” In order to succeed, you will need to know what you are doing; so my first recommendation is to read everything you can, and learn at least the basics before you begin.

The best place to start is our “Newbie Corner” – it is a rich depository of articles and guides that will quickly get you up to speed. Our “Article Archives” feature an incredible array of informative articles and tutorials on all aspects of the adult business, and is the next place to go on your journey of enlightenment. If there are some areas that you want to focus on, then our various “Corners” will help you out. Finally, you can get answers to specific questions by posting on our “Webmaster’s Workshop” message board.

At this point you should consider what it is that you are really interested in doing in this business. In today’s market, it has become increasingly harder for one person to “do it all” (site design, graphics, marketing, search engine promotion, etc., etc., etc.) and nearly impossible for one person to do this all “well.” You might prefer to focus on aspect of this business. Perhaps you have “mad PhotoShop and Flash skillz” – you may just be able to make quite a good living building pay site tours and ads, for instance.

Oz wrote a great article about this. You should read it before continuing; it may keep you from making a mistake, and help put you into your “dream job.” If you still really want to have your own site, then you need to decide what type of site is best for you.

“Free sites also leave you far more legally vulnerable than you should want to be.”

What Kind of Site Should I Build?

Now that you understand some of the basics of this business, you are ready to build your first adult website. But what kind of website? Or our purposes, we’ll consider that there are four basic types of adult sites: free, pay, AVS, and so-called traffic pumps. Let’s take a closer look:

Free sites are just that; they display adult materials free of charge in a non-age verified environment. They basically give away what you should be charging for. They are the easiest to build and maintain, but are bad for business in general.

Why? Consider that there are an estimated 56 MILLION free porn sites today. With all of this content available, why would anyone pay for porn? And if nobody is willing to pay for it, how will you profit? Free sites also leave you far more legally vulnerable than you should want to be.
