GTA 6 May Skip Physical Copies at Launch, Sources Say

Rockstar Games may release Grand Theft Auto 6 exclusively in digital format at launch, potentially delaying physical copies for weeks or months to prevent leaks. The highly anticipated game is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.

An insider identified as Graczdari, who reportedly manages physical game sales in Europe, told Polish website PPL.pl that Rockstar has not finalized plans for a simultaneous physical release. The source cited leak prevention as the primary reason for the potential digital-only launch strategy.

The timing for physical copies remains uncertain, with conflicting reports suggesting delays ranging from three to four weeks after digital release to as late as early 2027. Industry observers expect more clarity on the release strategy by mid-February 2026.

The potential digital-first approach would mark a significant departure from traditional game launches for major titles. Physical game releases have historically been vulnerable to early leaks when retailers receive inventory ahead of official launch dates.

Rockstar Games is a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive and one of the world’s most prominent video game developers, headquartered in New York City. Founded in 1998, the studio has generated billions in revenue through franchises like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne. The company is known for its meticulous development process and secretive approach to marketing, often spending years perfecting games before release.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise stands as one of gaming’s most successful and influential series. The previous installment, Grand Theft Auto V, became the second best-selling video game of all time with over 190 million copies sold since 2013. The open-world crime series is known for its satirical take on American culture, expansive virtual cities, and controversial content that has sparked both critical acclaim and public debate throughout its history spanning over two decades.

Rockstar last provided official updates on the game in November 2025, when the company delayed the release from its original 2025 target to November 2026. The studio has remained largely silent about the project since announcing the revised timeline. Any release strategy decisions for Grand Theft Auto 6 are closely watched by the gaming industry and investors given Rockstar’s track record of consistently pushing technical boundaries and generating significant cultural impact.
