PATTAYA, Thailand – Joe W. of Ofcom, the regulatory agency responsible for enforcing the United Kindgom’s “Online Safety Act,” is this week’s guest on the Adult Site Broker Talk podcast, the show announced today.
According to the announcement, Joe serves as a Supervision Principal for Ofcom, a role in which he’s “responsible for the regulator’s engagement with the adult industry, to try and help them navigate the requirements in the UK’s Online Safety Act.”
“Since 2023 Joe and his team have attended industry conferences, held workshops and written tailored guidance, all with the aim of supporting website owners on their compliance journey,” the announcement explained.
As noted in the announcement, the Online Safety Act “applies to any site or app with UK users.” Sites that host adult entertainment and other forms of content subject to the law are required to “use highly effective age assurance to make sure UK users are over 18.”
Ofcom is the UK’s communications regulator, overseeing telecoms, post, broadcast TV and radio, and online services. Ofcom is independent from the UK Government, but is tasked with enforcing provisions of UK law.
“Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom’s job is to make online services safer for people in the UK, especially children,” the announcement said. “Services are required to have effective systems in place to protect all UK users from illegal content and take steps to prevent and protect UK children from encountering pornography and other harmful content.”
Ofcom’s role includes “publicly consulting on guidance to support service’s compliance with the Online Safety Act; supervising services to ensure they understand and comply with their duties; and taking formal enforcement action against suspected breaches of those duties.”
As noted in the announcement, Ofcom recently published a report titled “Vet Your Vendor” to assist website owners when selecting an age assurance provider.
