LAJ: Great to have you with us this week Mickey! Tell us about SexMerchant and what you do over there.
Mickey: I am the general manager of SexMerchant.com. We offer an affiliate program for adult shopping. In addition to my duties as general manager I also provide customer and Webmaster support when needed.
LAJ: How does your affiliate program work?
Mickey: We offer an “upsell” for Webmasters to generate an additional revenue stream. Adult toys are the perfect upsell – every adult surfer is a potential customer. Participating Webmasters display our products or simply send us traffic, and receive a 25% commission on sales, and they get their traffic back, of course. SexMerchant also pays a 5% referral commission – sign up a Webmaster and collect 5% of his sales forever.
LAJ: How long have you been with the company?
Mickey: I’ve been with SexMerchant for about four years.
LAJ: That’s a long time to be with a company in our industry! Congrats to you. So business must be going well for SexMerchant. Is there a growing need for your services?
Mickey: The upsell options available to Webmasters out there just aren’t flexible enough, and also often are not really niche oriented, so that’s where SexMerchant comes in. Our affiliates can customize not only the look of the shopping cart but also the inventory. We convert niche traffic like crazy because we show surfers what we know they’re interested in. Let’s say you have a bondage site. You can customize the inventory to show only the fetish products. The easier you make it for the surfer to find what they want, the better your conversions will be. Another unique feature is that SexMerchant affiliates can link directly to a particular category, or even a particular item. For example, if you have an Asia Carrera gallery, put up a link that says “Sleep with Asia tonight!” and point it straight to the Asia Carrera love doll.
LAJ: Interesting concept. What were you doing before you got involved with SexMerchant?
Mickey: I’ve done everything from real estate to credit consulting. After the real estate market crashed and the Internet was gaining serious momentum, I saw a great opportunity to get into an Internet-based venture. And what is more profitable, interesting and fun than the adult industry?
LAJ: Not much that I can think of involving all three of those factors… that’s for sure!
Any changes you’d like to see in our industry or how we are all perceived?
Mickey: Let’s outgrow the stigma associated with our industry. Normal people enjoy sex. It’s the folks that think it’s something dirty or embarrassing that have a problem.
LAJ: Would you go back to real estate if you left the adult Internet?
LAJ: Yes… and if only more people realized that! As far as the uptight folks out there are concerned, you may as well be selling weapons of mass destruction or something…
Mickey: Sex is never going to go away and every day thousands of people turn 18 and enter the market. Every day more and more people have access to the Internet! And like I say, normal people like sex…
LAJ: That’s exactly what I tell new Webmasters uncertain if there is any traffic or potential customers left for them out there. The Internet is growing like crazy every day!
Have any other good advice?
Mickey: Upsell, cross-sell and network. Don’t try to stand alone! Spend your advertising budget wisely and show the surfers exactly what they want. Don’t make them dig for it!
LAJ: Any products you guys are working on that you would like to plug?
Mickey: We just launched SexMerchant’s exclusive line of body jewelry (both piercing and non-piercing) made of silver, yellow and white gold. We will be introducing the exclusive erotic line of body jewelry within the next couple of weeks.
