The Witcher 4 could become one of the most expensive video games ever produced, with an estimated budget exceeding $780 million, according to Polish analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski. The projection assumes a fourth-quarter 2027 release date and includes approximately $390 million each for development and marketing costs.
The estimate represents a dramatic increase from CD Projekt Red’s previous productions. Cyberpunk 2077 cost roughly $335 million to develop, while The Witcher 3 required $81 million in production expenses. The projected budget for The Witcher 4 would be nearly ten times the cost of its predecessor in the series.
Chrzanowski’s calculations factor in CD Projekt’s statement that The Witcher 4 will not launch in 2026. The analyst converted the estimated PLN 2.8 billion production cost to U.S. dollars, arriving at the $780 million figure.
The substantial investment raises questions about the game’s commercial viability and CD Projekt’s ability to recoup development costs. The success of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 suggests strong market demand for the studio’s titles, but several factors introduce uncertainty.
The upcoming game will utilize a new engine and feature Ciri as the protagonist instead of Geralt. Additionally, the story will not be based on the original Witcher books, departing from the source material that helped establish the franchise’s popularity.
CD Projekt has established itself as a prominent developer of action-adventure games with role-playing elements. The company’s previous releases have maintained strong sales performance despite technical issues at launch, particularly with Cyberpunk 2077’s initial reception.
