Legendary adult performer Tommy Gunn recently sat down with Sherman from EmmReport for an in-depth interview about the new documentary Fans Only: The Human Side of Porn. The hour-and-seventeen-minute conversation, now available on the EmmReport YouTube channel, dives into the making of the documentary, its vision, and the inspiring, human-centered approach that sets it apart.

During the interview, Tommy Gunn explored the origins of the film, recounting his initial meeting in 2024 with accomplished director Joel Van der Molen at the AVN Convention in Las Vegas. Impressed by Tommy’s authenticity and the vibrant dynamics of the adult industry, Van der Molen embarked on a multi-location exploration of the industry, working with Gunn and other industry insiders to craft a documentary that reveals a deeper, more compassionate perspective of the business.

The aim of Fans Only was not to sugarcoat the realities of the adult entertainment industry but to paint an authentic and nuanced picture that highlights the human side of its performers. Through candid interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary sheds light on the challenges performers face, such as societal stigma, relationships with loved ones, and struggles with mental health and substance abuse. Yet, the film also celebrates the industry’s sense of community and the passion of those involved.

“Understanding, honesty, and sincerity are the key messages here,” said Gunn. “This project is a chance to show performers as people who love their work and value their relationships with family, friends, and fans. It’s about showing their humanity.”

Director Joel Van der Molen, known for his award-winning works such as Gypsy Billionaire, leveraged his expertise to tackle the complex narratives surrounding the industry. Garnering praise for his ability to inspire openness in his subjects, Van der Molen expertly balanced the documentary’s tone to ensure it remains authentic. Fans Only has quickly gained recognition, reaching #11 and hovering in the TOP 20 on Amazon Prime. There are plans to expand availability of the film to platforms such as Apple TV and YouTube TV by late summer/early fall of 2025.

Sherman from EmmReport shared his thoughts on the film, saying, “I enjoyed having Tommy on the show and felt the documentary was very well made, especially the monologues where Tommy reflects on the business. With the success of episode one of Fans Only, Gunn and Van der Molen have already begun filming a follow-up, with multiple films planned, promising to further explore the industry and the lives of those within it. The initial episode features footage from industry events such as AVN, and  XRCO, as well as intimate interviews filmed on sets, in homes, and among industry insiders.

Reflecting on the documentary and his career, Gunn discussed the evolution of the industry. While acknowledging the challenges posed by shifts in the business—driven by the internet, Tube Sites, and the rise of content creators—Gunn’s passion for his craft and the people around him remains steadfast. “I’ve always felt like an ambassador for the industry, and working with Joel has been wonderful,” Gunn shared. “Through this film, we hope to leave something of value, not just for performers, but for everyone who watches.”
