RTA Label Website Goes Multilingual

YNOT – As part of an effort to internationalize its child-protection message, the Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection has translated the website for its award-winning Restricted to Adults labeling system into French, German and Spanish.

The RTA label is the adult entertainment industry’s response to legislative and parental demands that “something be done” about children’s access to age-inappropriate materials. According to Tim Henning, ASACP’s vice president for technology and forensic research, about 4.5 million adult websites use the tool. RTA-labeled pages receive more than 20 billion monthly views, Henning said.

The translated website represents the first phase in the association’s International Expansion Project, which also is expected to include translation of the organization’s virtual home, along with an education program. Under the latter, Chief Executive Officer Joan Irvine has begun meeting with lawmakers and business leaders worldwide in order to explain the importance of protecting children online and how the RTA label can assist companies in protecting themselves.

“The Internet is a global medium,” Irvine said. “As such, it requires a global approach to the problem of ensuring that only adults are viewing age-restricted content.”

ASACP is working with parental control companies in the European Union in order to firm its grasp on the evolving legal and cultural landscapes outside the U.S.

“The success of these long-term initiatives are dependent upon companies in Europe and elsewhere financially supporting ASACP and volunteering their expertise, as many U.S.-based companies have done over the years,” Irvine said. “It is through the generous assistance of international industry leaders that we are able to make the internet safer for children.”
