Gaming platform Roblox is facing challenges with its age verification system as users discover ways to bypass facial recognition technology designed to ensure online child safety. The platform recently implemented stricter age verification requirements, requiring users to pass checks before accessing chat functions.
A TikTok video demonstrating how to circumvent the system has gained significant attention, accumulating 854,000 views. User Sofia drew subtle aging lines on her face using makeup, successfully convincing the platform’s facial recognition system that she appeared 21 or older.
The incident highlights broader reliability issues with the verification process. Multiple users reported inconsistent results, with some adults being categorized as minors and vice versa, according to comments on the viral video.
Roblox divides users into six age-based chat categories: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, and 21+. Users can access their designated chat group plus adjacent age ranges above or below their category.
The new restrictions have generated significant user backlash. Some players have organized in-game protests, while others have turned to selling pre-verified accounts on secondary markets like eBay.
The platform offers two verification methods: ID verification for users 13 and older, and facial verification using camera-captured photos and videos. Many younger users rely solely on the facial recognition option.
In response to inquiries about the bypass methods, Roblox stated that its facial age estimation process incorporates “liveness signals and advanced fraud checks” designed to detect manipulated appearances including makeup or digital filters. The company said it is testing continuous age checks that would prompt users to reverify if their behavior doesn’t match their declared age group.
