JOYClub Denounces Last-Minute cancellation of Sex Education Screening Despite Prior Approval
LONDON – Last Friday night, JOYClub hosted what was meant to be an unforgettable Sex Education Cinema Experience at Everyman Cinema – a private screening and networking event for sex-positive educators such as Ally Iseman, Dr.Tara, Reed Amber, Bea Dux, Ruby Rare, Scotty Unfamous and Topher Taylor. The booking was confirmed weeks in advance but having tested the film days prior, the cinema then cancelled the event just 103 minutes before its official start, showing how the battle against censorship and stigma has shifted to offline as well as online.
“We understand that sex education content is not to everyone’s taste. But to cancel a private, consensual, 18+ educational event at the last minute is more than disappointing – it is censorship. Sex education keeps being censored not just online, but offline too. And that ignorance is exactly what we are trying to overcome.” – Stephan Strehlow, CMO at JOYClub
As sex positive professionals and brands face censorship and biased banning every day throughout the internet, JOYClub’s censorship last Friday marks another attempt at silencing projects that champion sexual wellness and focus on fostering important education around safer sex, consent, ethical practices, and pleasure.
However, what could have ended in disaster instead turned into a community coming together – The JOYClub team masterfully hosted an improvised gathering: The invited sex educators and influencers, many of whom had travelled to attend, were regrouped at another venue, making the abrupt cancellation a rallying point and turning censorship into community.
“JOYClub wants to create content that really teaches people about real pleasure. The team handled the situation like professionals and we all turned the night into a community night filled with real connection.” -Ally Iseman, Sex Educator and Coach
As JOYClub continues to champion freedom of expression and promote inclusive, shame-free, and practical sex education with its members, they stress that this incident highlights a deeper issue, which only stresses out the importance of their message: sex education is necessary, ethical, and legal.
To fight the stigma around sex education and the arbitrary decisions that were taken last Friday, JOYclub is releasing the censored film online for free so the community can access it openly. It features excerpts from their Sex Education site including:
