An Interview with Motorbunny – Marketing for Success

MotorbunnyKnown as “the most powerful ride-on-top vibrator on Earth,” Motorbunny creates one of the cleverest adult toys in the industry. The remote-control product comes with multiple attachments, height adjustment risers, premium addons for purchase such as BDSM accessories and gear, and a controller that goes all the way to 11.

With its seamless wireless set up giving users ‘endless “buzz’ and ‘twirl combinations,’ the ability to integrate games, sync with music, and more, Motorbunny is a technology pioneer that’s also been able to build a successful business in a competitive space.

How have they done it?

This week, I got to talk with Motorbunny’s Chief Marketing Officer, Craig Mewbourne, to give YNOT readers some insight into how the company is run, what gives them their edge, and how they overcome the inherent marketing challenges all adult toy companies face.

How did Motorbunny get its start?

Oddly enough, the founders began exploring leasing major medical equipment to rural health clinics. When enough red tape was presented, they went back to the drawing board and simplified the mission: How can we increase quality of life, and how can we make that technology more accessible? They learned about the ride-on-top vibrator niche and saw an opportunity to expand it with some simple innovations.

What is the Motorbunny corporate culture like?

It’s terrible. We have to meet in person a few times a year and there are too many snacks. Honestly, it’s amazing. The structure is largely virtual because our talent is all over the map, and everyone involved enjoys the levity of the niche we are in. “What are we focused on for the day/week/month” is all we care about as long as everyone is having fun.

What makes your product different than all the other sex toys out there? 

Where to start? We pioneered the wireless technology that makes this type of product effective for adult performers and we continue to refine it – most recently with an updated API that integrates seamlessly with Chaturbate. We maintain effective edges over competition in every niche, from stainless-steel tie-down points for BDSM enthusiasts, to seamless wireless control for long distance couples and cam performers.

What is the most difficult thing about running a company in the adult industry and how does your team overcome obstacles?

We all come from a variety of backgrounds – Enterprise-grade communications, Marketing for Telecom giants, Entrepreneurship. The most difficult thing for Motorbunny has been finding channels that aren’t stuffed up their own asses for marketing purposes.

The most basic marketing tactics and tools are unavailable to us because the entire industry has been deemed taboo. You hint at pleasure, and you’re shut down. We have a to get a little more creative about how we reach customers.

Tell us about a success you’re proud of.

Two recent successes have been partnerships with Doc Johnson and Red Room Accessories.

We’ve been able to partner to increase our customers’ range of creative sexual experiences by looking outside of our own pipeline to include trusted partners who also benefit. We haven’t seen much cross-pollination in the industry so far, but we’re keen to continue to lead the way.

What are the ways you’ve marketed the company that you’ve found to be successful?

As we mentioned, conventional marketing has its challenges. But one thing we’ve found extremely successful is to just make friends. We’ve made our way across several years of industry shows and have picked up fans and friends by just being genuine and nice. When we started out, there was a feeling of territorialism in the industry, and we’re seeing some open attitudes to collaboration now that we think will fuel the industry’s growth.

What are your goals for the company?

We want to greatly expand the range of experiences we offer. Now, we’re known as “the most powerful ride-on-top vibrator on Earth,” but people have smaller experiences that they need tools for as well. Connected gaming devices and social avenues are around the corner.
