Pornhub reported a significant surge in hockey-related searches following the premiere of HBO Max’s “Heated Rivalry,” a hockey romance series that debuted Nov. 28. The adult entertainment platform said searches for “hockey” increased by an average of 309% since the show’s launch, with peaks reaching 617%.
Female viewers drove much of the increase, with women’s hockey-related searches rising 273% compared to 148% among male users. The most popular hockey-related search terms included “hockey gay” with a 2,120% increase and “gay hockey” up 1,070%.
“Pornhub’s insights often reflect what’s resonating in the broader culture,” said Alex Kekesi, vice president of brand and community at the platform. “When a major pop culture moment sparks conversation, we often see that interest reflected in the search behaviors of our users.”
Based on a novel by Rachel Reid, “Heated Rivalry” follows two professional hockey players who engage in a romantic relationship. The series has gained attention for its explicit content and emotional storylines, particularly among female viewers.
Series creator Jacob Tierney said he insisted on maintaining the show’s explicit content despite initial industry resistance. “These books are porn,” Tierney told Slate magazine. “You think that the audience is here despite that? They’re here for this.”
Tierney said various Hollywood executives initially suggested delaying intimate scenes until a potential second season. He credited his decision to include explicit content from the beginning with the show’s positive reception among its core fanbase.
HBO Max has not announced a release date for a second season of the series.
