SAN FRANCISCO – Statistics and anecdotal evidence suggest transsexual porn is growing in popularity. According to sales figures tracked by an online adult entertainment retailer, nowhere is the trend more apparent than in California, which outpaces all other U.S. states in consumption of the material.
During the past year, California accounted for 17 percent of transgender porn sales on GameLink.com, followed by New York with 7.3 percent. Texas was in third place with 5 percent, followed by Arizona with 4.9 percent, Florida with 4.7 percent, Michigan with 4.4 percent, Virginia with 4 percent and Maryland with 3.6 percent. New Jersey stood 10th with 3.5 percent.
Of the states in the top 10, only California, New York, Illinois, Maryland and New Jersey have laws protecting transgender persons. Texas, Arizona, Florida, Michigan and Virginia do not offer legal protections.
According to GameLink’s sales numbers, transgender porn makes up 10 percent of the e-tailer’s annual revenue and sales have increased 14 percent over the past year.
“The growing consumption of transgender porn is a sign that Americans are becoming more ready to accept transgender individuals than in the past,” said Jeff Dillon, vice president of business development and marketing for GameLink’s parent company, eLine.com.
Dillon told International Business Times transgender porn has been a catalyst for increased acceptance of transgender people.
“Over the past 15 years we’ve watched viewership of content featuring transgender performers skyrocket,” he said.
“In the 1970s, we introduced the world to the first images of interracial [black and white] couples having sex in the movie Behind the Green Door,” he added. “This was incredibly shocking at the time, but it soon became mundane. I believe a similar connection can be made between porn and the rapid acceptance of other social [and] sexual shifts, including same-sex marriage and gay rights, ethical non-monogamy and swinging, and now transgender rights.”
