LOS ANGELES, CA — With 4 million Botox injections given in 2006 to a million people hoping to look wrinkle-free, according to the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons, the Botox flubs that are happening seem almost inevitable.Botox is not exclusive to those with dermatologists or plastic surgeons on call, as it once was 20 years ago when the drug first arrived on the market. Treatment can cost anywhere from $200 in the mall to $500 in the office per area injected. Thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign by Allergan, the Irvine-based company that manufactures the protein, along with offering its certified injection courses, Botox is available at the mall, at medi-spas, and can be administered by non-aesthetic specialists: gynecologists, family practitioners, a variety of other medical professionals, as well as non-physicians.

This has lead to more people than ever experiencing the effects of poorly done injections. Seemingly frozen foreheads with eyebrows that register no expression abound, along with drooping eyelids, sloping brows, and the inability to squint or frown among the side effects of poorly-done Botox injections.

“Botox is deceptively simple. You mix it, you inject it in a few key spots and then you’ve paralyzed the muscles,” said Dr. Murad Alam, an associate professor of dermatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine to The Los Angeles Times.

When Botox is poorly administered, he adds, “It’s like going to the mall and buying a designer knockoff and then when you get home, you’re disappointed when you realize the quality isn’t the same as the original Dior.”
Beverly Hills plastic surgeon A. John Vartanian prefers to use Botox as part of a multi-faceted approach, using it in combination with Restylane to fill in lines, instead of just over-using Botox as a big pimpin’ super-duper wrinkle eraser.

“The goal should not be to take away wrinkles at any cost. The goal is to make people look good, and sometimes that means one or two lines should stay,” Vartanian said.
