HOUSTON – As each year ends, Top 10 lists fly like snowflakes. One of the most interesting is the list compiled by Fame Registry, a “Who’s Who”-like directory of porn stars. The list is interesting because, according to founder Kelli Roberts, it’s compiled from publicly available, quantifiable data, not merely opinions.
“It seems everyone has an opinion about who the most popular porn stars are,” said Roberts, who began Fame Registry after observing the statistics domainers use to value domain names. “Barely a month goes by where some publication or another isn’t putting out some arbitrary list of top-ranked porn stars. Some will rank them based on movie sales or some based on reader input, and yet others will put together lists based on no real rhyme or reason at all. Opinions are nice but I wanted to know who really was the most popular porn star based on real scientific data.”
Every month, the registry determines a mob of top lists by using proprietary algorithms to crunch data including Alexa Traffic Reports, Google term frequency, Overture keyword rating, Wordtracker searches, Estibot domain name values, Penthouse Pet status and awards won. At the end of the year, all of those lists are crunched yet again to determine Fame Registry’s ultimate 10: the Top 10 Most Searched-for Porn Stars of the year.
Search frequency “is a big factor — although not the only — in judging a porn star’s overall popularity,” Roberts said. “It basically tells us how many times each month fans go out there and actually search for their favorite stars. The more fans a porn star has, the more times people are out there searching for them.”
