YNOT – Adultspace.com, an online adult dating network, has installed a new verification process to help protect members from spam and fake user profiles.“Anyone who has tried connecting with ‘real people’ on dating sites or in sex personals knows how obnoxious and annoying spammers can be,” owner Ruben Banks said. “They set up fake profiles with pictures of supermodel-caliber men or women in an attempt to lure legitimate members away to other adult personals websites or to video links which require a payment just to view.
“Unfortunately, many dating website owners not only do nothing to prevent this, [but] they have been known to participate in the creation of false member profiles just to create the illusion of greater value for their site. Evidence of this can be found on freelance bidding websites where owners of dating sites post jobs to hire writers who can ‘create 50 dating profiles.’ These are profiles which dating site members pay good money to view and to try and connect with real people, without knowing that they are being fooled by fraudulent adult personals.”
Banks said anyone with an internet connection can establish scams using made-up personal info and fake pictures. The problem, he noted, is endemic and keeps many prospective legitimate members from signing up for a service they desperately want.
In response, Banks developed a profile verification process he said is simple for members to complete, yet effective in eliminating fraud. To complete the process, members must photograph themselves holding a piece of paper with their username on it, then send the photo to be approved by the Adultspace admin team. Once the photo is approved, the member’s profile is sealed with a “verified” label. This way, members who are searching for legitimate sex personals know the person they are communicating with is the person in the profile picture, Banks said.
Banks also said the new verification process, while manpower-intensive on his end, will provide Adultspace members with a more authentic adult personals experience. Still, he does not plan to begin charging for membership, which currently includes free access to personals, classified ads, adult videos and live-cam chat rooms.
