Minka Studios Prepared to Debunk 3D Content Production Myths

YNOT – Juan “Nikko” Vargas, founder of Miami-based Minka Studios, will take part in the “3D: Fad or Future?” panel discussion scheduled to occur Aug. 6 during The AVN Show in Hollywood, Fla.
J. Lalls, Daniel 3D and legendary producer-director Axel Braun will join Vargas on the panel, which will be moderated by AVN Associate Managing Editor Steve Javors. Javors said the discussion promises to be an eye-opener for adult content producers who remain undecided about whether to venture into sexually explicit 3D productions.
Producing 3D content requires a leap of faith in the current market, he noted, but deciding whether to move into the realm needn’t be frightening.
“3D is a great opportunity to increase revenue in the adult industry,” Vargas said. “I hope to be able to dispel some of the common myths about stereoscopic video production on this panel.
“One of the greatest myths is that 3D production is very expensive,” he added. “That is simply not true. Production of 3D video can be done economically, and the returns are worth the extra investment over a regular [high-definition video] production.”
Over the 14 years of Minka’s history, Vargas and his crew have applied many different types of technology to 3D production, he said. 3D camera rigs of the 1990s were designed for open spaces and required static positioning to produce good video. That has changed significantly in the past three years, he noted.
“We have developed a proprietary 3D camera rig that is very mobile,” he revealed. “It is lightweight, can get within an arm’s length of the performers and can be used in any location the cameraman and the director choose. We have produced 3D videos in association with Pleasure Dynasty that have the feel of reality shows, using the 3D rig just as you would any handheld video camera. It gives 3D high-definition quality while allowing for so much flexibility in shooting, and that is what the adult industry needs.”
Minka’s 3D rigs are suitable for internet content production, and the finished product streams well, Vargas said. In order to get the stereoscopic effect, viewers still need red-and-blue 3D glasses, but they do not need special television or DVD equipment.
For producers looking to test the 3D waters, Minka Studios offers production and post-production services from its Florida home base. Packages include location shoots, editing and mastering of the finished video.
