Help Researching Porn Trends |
 |
 |
Hi all,
Brand new to YNOT and have never worked in the adult industry. I'm a web developer, but have never done adult websites. I read through some of the "Getting Started" articles, and the main thrust (pun intended) of most seemed to be, "have a plan, have some basic business sense, experiment, find or invent a niche, and BE PATIENT."
A question I have is, how do I determine what porn surfers out there are looking for? Are there ways to research what types of content are popular so as to avoid the types that aren't? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

The general answer is that someone is looking for anything you can think of.
A couple of general rules:
* You want to avoid the most popular stuff, because you and everyone else are all chasing the same surfers. The Big Boys have a huge advantage over you. (Imagine trying to open a single restaurant selling grilled hamburgers, fries and Coke. What are your chances?)
* The smaller and more specialized the niche ("micro-niche"), the better for a small operator because the Big Boys don't want to mess with it--not enough profit for them.
* However, it is possible to get too specialized. Consider, for example, latex-wearing Asian lesbian BBW grannies. (A) Where would you get content? (B) Are there really enough surfers to support it?
* Go for something that you, yourself, enjoy. For one thing, you will be spending a lot of time with it. If overweight women turn you off, looking at BBW sex will quickly become a real chore.
Second, if you share a particular fetish, you will know what is good and what is not good. That is why you will see discussions among male webmasters asking each other what kind of porn do women enjoy. Not being women, they are clueless.
Third, you will know how people within the fetish talk about it. How do real lesbians (not women who pretend to be lesbians in porn aimed at men) refer to each other and the various body parts? If you don't know, your ignorance will quickly become apparent to your prospective customers.
Best of luck, keep asking questions, keep us informed of your success, and when you become a gazillionaire remember that I prefer yellow Ferraris.

Thanks Gordie!
This is a very helpful response, and you've provided some good guidelines to help point me in the right direction. When I'm a rich as Peter North, your yellow Ferrari is tops on my shopping list.

You should also invole yourself in the industry as a consumer, join forums and sites where there is a member base of people who are discussing things that they like. There are many members base forums available, seek out area's that interest you and get with the people, there is much to be learned by hearing others discuss sex...

If you are not into porn yourself, as a consumer, it will be much harder to work out what people want and how to get them to pay for it.
Very good advice already given on this thread, I would follow it.
