When there are millions to be made, men like him don't go away. Sadly.

What's even more sad is that there will be plenty of people right there with their wallets open buying up all these useless domains.

I have no doubt... they'll be wasting their money though.

The guy's timing is horrible.
* We're in a recession
* Angst about making money in the online pornography industry is running high
* The chance of getting pornography ghettoized into a mandatory .xxx is pretty much nil now that John "I Lost A Senate Race To A Dead Guy" Ashcroft and Berto "I Don't Recall" Gonzalez are history
* The Religious Right has been supplanted by the Tea Baggers who keep screaming about Smaller Government and Less Intrusion
* And ICANN seems to have squashed the Wild West practice of squatting on other peoples' trademarked names
I mean, who in their right mind would try to register something like Playboy.xxx or Hustler.xxx?
Seems like a non-issue to me.

I agree wholeheartedly actually.
It IS a non-issue.
A wildly OVER HYPED non-issue.

The problem is that they couldn't cybersquat even if they wanted to. From what I read of the article people won't be able to just sign up and purchase a .xxx domain as you do with current TLDs.
The article states that "...potential domain registrants will be required to prove they are members of the adult entertainment community—not, for example, virtual real estate speculators."
It then goes on about the "code of conduct." While I'm all for that as too many adult sites use what I consider illegal methods of gaining revenue (i.e. attempting to autoinstall spyware and adware on computers w/o the user's authorization). I wonder if this would also include websites with aggressive tactics? Those where tons of popups, unders, overs, and through the woods practically lock up the browser.
The problem is where is he going to get all this money? I know he's rich but his goal is more than just being the owner of a domain extension. It seems like he's going to be policing the .xxx domains.
My curiosity is, "What is considered virtual real estate?" For example, some people starting out don't have their own content. They will use remote streaming videos and many affiliate systems. While it's no sign that the person running the site is unethical, would it be up to the high and mighty standards Lawly will create?
Back to the original quote... I'd imagine if Lawly runs the .xxx domains as strict as the states, then it seems that well-known companies will have a much easier time claiming their virtual turf from cybersquatters.

.XXX has always been about making money off selling the domain names.
Lawley's stated altruistic motives may well prove to be a sham.
Meanwhile, this decision creates the possibility of ease of ghettoization and the stifling of free speech when it comes to that of explicit adult nature -- that is not a good thing at all.
Hopefully, Lawley's efforts will be seen for what they are -- a money grab and be discounted by a skeptical adult industry. In other words, hit the circular file.

Heh... altruistic motives my ass. This is has been and always will be about money and money only.
More often than not anytime someone says they are "doing it to protect children" really mean "we are doing it to make money but need a good cover up excuse".

Well it looks like ICANN's put the stop on the .xxx thing again, so maybe it'll stay that way this time
