Advice on what to do with Content
So I first want to humbly ask for your patience as this is my first post and I need some advice from some people.

Over the last couple of years I have made about 15 scenes and now I don't know what to do with them. When I first started I had some cash (a little Real Estate money = which is now gone poof) and I was ready to change the "world of porn". I would do this by creating hi quality (HD) "films" along with an awsome soundtrack (licensing from real bands!) and touching interviews with top notch preformers. I thought I would have something the world would be crawling through the desert to get (or better yet-buy!). Unfortunately that wasn't the case as the distributor of my films (DVD) had a reshuffle (aren't they all) and now do not know how to market what I do.

I recieved a few awards along the way (Good Vibrations , X-Biz Filmfest, Fem Porn Awards), which is nice, but it's hard to pay the rent (or bandwidth as they say) with a glass trophy.

So do any of you fine folks have any ideas? Could I just offload this content to a company or individual, or perhaps license it to someone for use in there website/s? Overseas? Brokers?

I would be interested in perhaps starting a paysite, but frankly wouldn't know how to market it (I'm a doctor Jim-not a miracle worker!), Would anyone be interested in starting a site and handling the back end/afiiliate marketing? Is 15 scenes enough to start a pay site?

This may soud a little rediculous but I probaby spent in upwards of 300k on these films (and some mistakes making these films, lol) and do not expect to get anything close to what I put in to them.

You can see a sample here: www.newromantix.com

The VOD is off but if you click on BTS you can get a taste.

Love to hear your thoughts.

All the best,
Max Royale

Hi Max,

I'm always amazed how people invest in products without giving a thought about how to sell them.

I used to spend 20K a unit for producing a video series but I had a sales staff and was recouping the expense on release day, 1 unit had 4-5 scenes in it.

You need to get yourself a hard copy of AVN. Look at the ads and start contacting the manufacturers of higher quality productions such as VCA, Wicked or Vivid. A big catalog house like Adam and Eve can pay that kind of money. It is possible to make a sales or distribution deal. When you have someone interested-try to get several, I will be happy to tell you if the guys you are dealing with are likely to screw you and if you're being offered a fair deal.

You need to decide how desperate you are for money. You can sell the material out right or you can try to sell the foreign rights separately. If you have the time and ability you will turn a profit by selling everything separately.

There are brokers for foreign distribution, you need a different one for TV and cable and a third for motel sales and possibly a forth for the net. You could put 3-5 scenes together as a disc -don't know what you call a scene-and make a US distribution deal with one of these companies. You have 3-4 units in the can and a series is usually a contract of 10 minimum. Since I have no clue what the content really is I can't get more specific than that but what little I saw did seem quite excellent quality wise so if you can hold out you may get somewhere financially.

Warning about brokers: they are notorious crooks. There are many stories of people using baseball bats and guns to collect their money. I didn't know any better and kept asking why the end user was paying the broker directly and the brokers were issuing me checks. When I learned it's because the 15% that was being paid was to ME when I thought it was THEIR commission I broke my contracts with the brokers and all hell broke loose.

I'm still trying to figure out how you spent 20k per scene? Your butt hole must be hurting...does that include spending 200 k on all kinds of equipment?

While I can't offer the same kind of very well-informed advice on this as davilan, must say your stuff looks damn nice from the preview...

Who are some of the bands on the soundtrack?

Davilan,
Thank you for the response. I can see you've done this and appreciate your insights Smile

I will start looking at AVN and contacting the some of the higher end studios. I have met a few friends at some conferences and this sounds like a good starting point.

As far as brokers are concerned I've heard simular experiences from others. This is part of the reason I've posted here...that and I do not really know where the industry is as far a the content market is concerened. As I come accross some I will pm you (if thats ok) there names for a thumbs up or thumbs down.

I started this project 4 years ago and at the time I was making pretty good dough in real estate and working in the education system (making E-Learning Modules). Since then the market has changed and I now longer do the modules. I have learned a lot about business through this experience and all in all i wouldn't change what happen, but to do it all over I would have done it totally different. Totally diferrent.

Is there anyone off hand that you could recommend? Perhaps on the web side?

Thanks again for your insights and I'll keep this post going to update people on how its going.

Also, does anyone have any thoughts on Clips 4 Sale, Hot Movies, or AEBN? I've been talking to them and while they seem like great companies, I'm wondering if it would diminish my content somewhat as right now most of my content is unpublished. Thoughts anyone?

unpublished is more valuable for a manufacturer to buy outright. If you're selling piecemeal then your diminishing the value only in that segment. To make money on a clips sight you have to work hard at marketing it yourself.

If you know upfront how brokers work you're a whole lot less likely to get screwed. It was a happenstance that I ran into one of my contractual foreign distributors and learned he was paying 10 k a unit for distribution rights. You can't imagine not only how angry I was but how stupid I felt standing in front of the guy knowing I only received 1500. Then all of the answers to the questions I'd been asking became very clear to me...

A site like twistys may pay good money for prime material. I don't know if they'll buy only net rights there are a couple of high end sights like them out there. If you know what the going rate should be, and you retain the right to sell your product yourself you' shouldn't be afraid of trying brokers.
