Jamie Gillis |

I was out all weekend and discovered that Jamie Gillis died over the weekend. I remember him when I was way too young to watch porn. I take it several of you old timers here were familiar with him?

Hey! I resemble that remark, what do you think it was that aged me, that's right, Jamie Gillis movies....
He died Saturday at the age of 66, I heard through Vanessa Del Rio, she took the news hard as they worked together during the revolutionary golden days of erotica. I first read about Jamie in a porn magazine in the mid seventies, this being even before I saw a feature, they were features back in those days.
Jamie, along with John Leslie, Joey Silvera, Paul Thomas, Mike Ranger, John Holmes, et al, were the studs du jour back in the '70's. They were all kinky studs, but there was something different about Jamie, he really came across as depraved, a real pervert. In many of he scenes he would simple jerk off while he talked nasty to the girl, but he was also involved in some real hardcore fucking, and in those days actress like Annette Haven, Lisa Deleeuw, Vanessa, really made it seem kinky.
I saw just about every porno made during those early years, there weren't many I missed. But there were a couple of movies that really stuck with me, in other words they stood out because of the pure nastiness of the sex, and it was Jamie that made them nasty. In fact I even purchased those movies when they finally came out on DVD years later, because in those days you saw it once and lived with the memory. One of his movies that stood out involved him dieing and going to heaven, it at first seemed like heaven because all St Peter had him do was have all kinds of sex with gorgoues women. After what seemed like an incredible amount of sex for one man to have, the kicker of the story was that he was actually in hell, the sex was even too much for him to take.
I think Jamie was from the East Coast, I used to see him on the streets here in NY periodically. In fact one night I was walking home and about a block from my house I noticed him sitting in a taxi cab double parked, in the drivers seat with a hot looking blonde in the front with him. I figured he was working, surely porn wasn't a full time job for him in the late eighties, but that always struck me as odd to see him in that cab right down the block from where I live.
That last series of his I bought was of him taking a porn star and going out and finding an average Joe to have sex with her. He culled these Joe's from peep-shows, strip clubs, or right off the street. You could hear the depravity in his voice as he interviewed these guys, he himself enjoying the fact that the guy was about to get laid by his favorite starlet. In every scene after the guy had lost his cookies, Jamie himself would climb aboard and offer a stroke shot of his own, now that's some kinky shit!
So rest in peace Jamie Gillis, and kudo's for your contribution to dirty movies. I would probably not have become the pervert I am today without having enjoyed Jamie's movies throughout the years...

Jamie Gillis is probably my favorite male lead from the era. Besides the depravity mentioned by housekeeper, he also had some real acting chops. The Opening of Misty Beethoven is a great example, one of the all-around best pornos ever IMO...

Wow, that's really too bad.
He really was one of the all-time greats.
I remember seeing him in quite a few movies, although the only names I can come up with right now are Misty Beethoven (as mentioned by Roberto) and Cafe Flesh.

I reported this in another thread on Saturday.
Actually Jamie did quite a bit of directing. I think he was better behind the camera then in front of it.
"I saw just about every porno made during those early years"
Housekeeper-You really ARE an old timer-I think the second film Edison ever made was a nudie-porn at the time. Porn was indeed a popular item at the gold camps during the gold rush. Did your claim pan out?
Maybe I misunderstood you and you go all the ways back to ancient Greece where not only the word porno comes from but it's where porn is considered to have started? Did you know Aphrodite?

Was Misty Bethoven the break-out movie for Annette Haven? Or was it Georgina Selvin?
I know I'm not the oldest pervert on the block...

Actually it was the fresh-faced 'Constance Money' making her debut, she only did a handful of flicks. So named by director Radley Metzger as she was constantly asking him for money. I read somewhere that she was also an item with Jamie Gillis while filming Misty.
I do love me some Annette Haven though!

That's true, it was originally the 'bus-stop' series I think. The 'dirty debutantes' series was significant in that it opened the door for 'reality porn' or amateur style porn, which was really not prominent at that particular time. It always amazed me as dorky as Ed was he was able to get those young girls to do the nasty on film, certainly the $ was the impedus. Those series also launched the career of mega-dicked stud and porn emprassario Jake Steed, as well as several other porn star upstarts including a gorgeous busty puerto rican girl named Kira.

You're right, Miss Constance's career was short lived, but she certainly wasn't all that, at least by the type's of performance's that gals like Vanessa Del Rio, Sharon Mitchell, and Seka were putting out, to name a few. If memory serves me Jamie also was smitten with Annette, and I'm with you all the way Roberto, she was quite alluring to say the least.

The "Bus Stop Tails" were the series before "Dirty Debutantes". The Bus Stop Tails were I believe the first ever real picking up girls off the streets for porn videos. Not like today where it is ALL set up before hand. Ed would actually attempt and sometimes succeed in picking up unsuspecting girls at bus stops and get them to have sex on camera. Yes, the $$$ where what made that work. The series was short lived mainly do to the problems picking up girls like that as you could imagine. Besides having the police called on him, Ed once told me a story of one girl who actually opened her purse to show she had a gun. Next came the Dirty Debutantes. Pretty much was based on girls first time sex on camera. That series started in the late 70's or early 80's and is still in production today. I believe Gillis was one of the first to partner with Ed in that series. Several other guys followed Gillis which gave them a start in the industry. I think Dirty Debutantes were the least kinky videos Gillis was in. It sure looked like he loved what he did.

Bus Stop Tales was the Ed Powers series that preceded Dirty Debs. Ed had a different name for that series. Actually Dirty Debs was started by both Ed and Jamie as partners, they split by unit 3 or 4.
I think it had to do with Jamie signing with VCA to direct and he was shooting his own series at the time. They also had Randy in the first couple of units. Randy also split to start his own series and Ed continued alone.
At the time the going rate was about $800 for a scene in LA. Ed paid up to $2000 for a girl that was going to do her first scene. Later, when Randy started his own series in competition with Ed, they would duke it out over the price of a hot first timer until it would turn out that the same girl's "first time ever" was in both of their series. Even Later there was a 3rd and 4th series as competition with several girls being on all 4 series box covers as "Video Virgins" with the first timer making out very OK at $2500 per first time!
My first series was "What if Ed Powers actually shot Dirty Debs so you could see the action instead of only his fat butt, used good lighting and the sex was longer than the interviews!"
Ed's first movie and for that matter Jamie's first movie along with Ron Jeramie's and a number of others, were all with the very famous (at the time) Cecil Howard. For a brass figlagee with bronze oak leaf palms, What was Ed's name in Bus Stop Tales? Hint-Ed, like Jamie, used his real name in his first material.
Ed, Jamie, Ron and Cecil are all New Yorkers of course-New York was actually the center of porn production in the 35mm, shot on film, golden era of porn. The mid west was distribution and LA was were you got busted shooting or distributing.
Later, the mid west was where most of the major obscenity trials took place. The "boys" controlling distribution were broken up-most of the precedent setting obscenity trials were actually attempts to jail mafia bosses and started as the only way to break up the mob and were not really about 1st amendment obscenity.
When home video came out, North Hollywood became video and film stayed in New York. Jamie was a New Yorker and did the bi-coastal thing till the business turned basically to video-LA won that battle. Jamie has been in so many classics that it should be a number of generations before there's no one jerking off to one of the very fine girls he's had the pleasure of doing on film.

Very true, I don't think a lot of people know that. Joey Silvera is from Long Island and Randy is a NY'er as well, but many of the productions from those same years were done in San Fransisco by way of the Mitchell Bros. and I think Chuck Damiano. When I'm in San Fran I stay around the corner from the O'Farrell Theatre, a bygone era...
The upside to those early productions in NY were of course the emergence of Vanessa Del Rio, Susie Nero, Sharon Mitchell, et al.
You guys are taking me too far back, my brain is hurting. Time to get back to my t-girls...

Do you mean Gerard Damiano-Deep Throat Damiano?
New Yorker-of course!!!
Deep Throat opened in a single Manhattan theater and actually became famous when the New York Times published an article that secretaries were spending their lunch hours watching Deep Throat as it was under an hour and for some reason appealed to woman. As I remember it, it was the first x film to gross over a million. A mil in those days would be equivalent to maybe 20 mil today.
He also shot in New York...

If not for hysterical knowledge, lol..
But you're right, people in the industry should look back, knowledge of evolution in any industry is healthy..
