Video Cards |
 |
 |
Hey all you video encoding guys..
What do you think of this card.
www.nvidia.com
They make a version of it now that comes with 1.8Gb of dedicated memory and I'm looking at it to serve as a duel purpose Gaming and trans-coding system. I want to be able to kill horde before they stop lagging and do video functions as well. They say that this sucker encodes faster than a CPU.

I've been using g-force for years, I ran into problems when I switched to Win 7 64bit OP, but otherwise have no complaints.
Based on what you're presenting here, I would say go for it, however this sounds like one for Bankei to address...

Think about it-is it bypassing the CPU when encoding? Otherwise there's no value in being faster. The hard drive is still a whole lot slower. A system that is writing to a hard drive needs to optimize for hard drive speed. That's what encoding is about-writing to the hard drive.
Don't know the price but if it's worth the bucks for the gaming that's the reason to buy it. You can have the same results for encoding for less money. Same with transcoding-it's going from the hard drive to the hard drive.
What I am really curious about is what's going to replace a hard drive and when? Flash memory is faster and more reliable. In the space of a hard drive you can get probably 5 terabytes of flash memory. What good is USB 3 speed until storage is fast? Flash is approaching Dram speed. So a Dram speed flash memory system would make a pc a super computer and do away with things like the need for a 2 gig cache on a video card or even the dram. You could have a 100 gigs of flash hard drive space dedicated to the cpu.
A pro video camera can put about 4 hours of HD on a flash card now, with USB 3 direct into a flash hard drive there is no encoding and talk about fast...
