Video Compression Rates Question |
 |
 |
I have a new client I am designing a site for and she is asking what compression rate she should use for the video.
She is established and experienced in filming and DVD production, but not so much on the web.
Can anyone help with advice on production of video clips for the members section?
I know what is offered in the big paysites these days as far as full scenes, clips and file types, but I have no idea how they make them.

Kevin, I am very knowledgeable about video editing, encoding & compression. Nowadays there are several good tools to use for batch video encoding, and I use a few depending on the task. Videocharge is a great all purpose video encoding application for pcs. I also use Sorenson Squeeze, which is a full featured professional video encoding app, as well as Adobe Flash encoder sometimes.
The most popular formats for members areas are Flash, WMV, .mp4, DIVX/Xvid & iPOD. MPEG-1 and Quicktime and even Real used to be more popular a few years ago for standard definition video. If you need any more specific advice, post here or feel free to hit me up on icq or email.

How about the compression rate? |
The video bitrate varies a bit depending on the format, the frame size and the trade-off you want to make for quality versus file size. Assuming you are starting with HDV footage, I normally use a bitrate of about 3500 Kbps for a 1280 x 720 WMV file, and stereo audio. A 35 minute WMV movie will end up being about 1Gb in file size at that bitrate. For smaller frame sizes like 480 x 270 I use a 1500 Kbps video bitrate. You can get away with an even lesser bitrate for Flash, Divx and mp4. Experiment and see what looks good with a short clip. There's other tricks as well- I normally add a little filter to my videos in the encoding process to add a little brightness, color saturation or contrast to make the resulting videos pop a little bit more. Of course, the quality will always look better at the end result if the video in the camera was lit and shot well!

bankei had some very helpful posts on this topic in the past year or so - unfortunately search is down at the moment so I'm unable to bring them up.
I do second Sorenson Squeeze for encoding however, great piece of software.

2 pass VBR (variable bit rate) encoding generally better than CBR (constant bit rate), interlaced. Saving copies from master in DV is generally best quality high file size and should encode nicely to other formats, or AVI, smaller file size good quality.
MP4 is fast becoming the norm and now recently MT2, large file size good quality, but that would have to be encoded to a much lower size. Quality and size also depends on frame rate, generally 24 - 29.97, as well as if you've shot in 4:3 or 16:9 widescreen...

Hey Guys...Sorenson is great as well as Procoder..which is much faster. I would highly recommend OffshoreEncoding.com. They encode for many of the biggest video players, are extremely knowledgable, and at $ 10 per hour of content no one beats their prices. check um out ...contact 323-325-2455
Hope that helps

Our current bit rates are as follows:
320x180 @ 300kbs
480x272 @ 700kbs
640x360 @ 1100kbs
852x480 @ 2000kbs
1280x720 @ 2800kbs
These mostly work 2-pass VBR, though I've found that the 1-pass VBR Main Concept H264 does a good job in half the time in Squeeze.
I'm writing a blog post on resolutions right now. I'll put a link up to it when it's done. That's the part that most designers get wrong.
If I add bitrates to another post I'll squish 'em together and see if Jay wants to publish it. The best thing at the moment is to start with H264 MP4. On my site I have the same MP4 file playing in Flash, Silverlight and QuickTime.
Squeeze Pro is the best of the prosumer stuff. Any of the others will work too. I'm going to try the new Expressions Encoder next week. Microsoft says it does great H264. We'll see. If you do use Squeeze, let me know and I can sort out a profile for you.
If you have 40-50 grand lying around, get Digital Rapids

Depending on the footage itself and unless you really know what you are doing, and depending on what encoding system you use, these numbers are quite low and might cause some less than desirable results.
Bankei is a encoding master - but not everyone's going to get good looking footage at these numbers. In my experience these numbers are the most realistic only for MP4 and FLV, and even then it's dodgy (again, depending on the footage itself).
For WMV and MPEG2 these numbers are usually a little too low.

I'm with you there, especially for MPEG-2. WMV 9 is still pretty good, but with Silverlight now doing H264 I don't think it's going to be around for the long haul.
We have the advantage of having most of our source come off HDCAM and Digibeta. Most adult content doesn't come that way.
He should definitely test. When I first wanted to do 1280x720, I started with two minutes of Madonna at 5000kbs and worked my way down. It really started to lose it at 2200kbs or so.
Kevin - when I have time I'll sort out the math for you.
