Hosting company closing |
 |
 |
Just got a certified letter from my primary hosting company, a local ISP that still mainly sells dial-up services and local business websites, that they will be going out of business when their current office lease and contract with their upstream ISP expires in about 8 months. Our contracts have a 6 month notification cancellation clause.
Some of our sites are hosted on older servers that we own and they host and manage on their premises. They host the affinity email services. We have a HUGE amount of archived content onsite at their premises, including 14 years of BBS chat, blogs and etc. The BBS software is owned by them and I think the company is out of business. Other stuff is on their servers both on and off site.
What are the options when something like this happens, is it practical to become your own ISP? Can I do it in a spare bedroom; I've heard stories of that being done years ago. What kind of tech skill, capital and etc. does it take today. Are there any good resources available to evaluate this as an option?

Not sure how to answer that. I don't know what much is. Not much in the way of surfers, its hard for surfers to find it and/or find the content; that is intentional and by design. The message boards are populated by a steadly growing group of regulars that seem to read frequently and post occasionally, and a handful of regulars that seem to be posting constantly. You must subscribe (free) to read and search, log-in to post. Users must identify themselves and be verified, but no credit card is required. There are at this minute 237 users in the message boards and archives, 6 logged in. There is a lot of search activity in the archives. There are a few thousand email accounts with differing degrees of activity. There is shopping, which doesn't get much traffic at all, zero right now. There is video, and the video sucks up bandwidth/throughput like crazy; only 1 user right now. Activity has a peek in the afternoon and a bigger peek in the late evening. Right now is the afternoon peek.

Running in your home is costly depending on how big a pipe you need.
For instance I received one quote for $800 a month in fees for a T1 into my house. I'm like, I can get that from Verizon business for like $200 on an unlimited Business DSL.
The real costs are in the connection and in electricity. Depending on how many PC's you have going your electric bill can go up dramatically.
On average, and this is North East US electric rates, a PC eats up $20 a month in juice if running 24/7 and not monitor on.

If you don't already know all of the answer to those questions then you are probably not in the position to do this yourself. Running the core networks and maintaining connectivity to the web are not something lightly undertaken.
If this site isn't already paying for all of its own expenses and delivering you a sizable profit on an annual basis then I would not make it the reason for undertaking what you are discussing. Please understand that is not to say that the site is not worthwhile but that rather that perhaps you would be better off finding and assisting a profession company to help you migrate everything to a new host in the time that you have available.
I for one would very much like to know who this company is so that I could contact them, do you happen to know if they are selling any of their assets?
Good luck and feel free to contact me directly with additional questions on this topic.

I would say it's not practical to be your own ISP from your home. How do you handle redundancy in power and Internet connections. Most providers have BGP bandwidth and everywhere from 10Mbps to GigE uplink ports. And then UPSs backed by diesel fuel generators. If I'm not mistaken, the max transfer you can get out of a T-1 is less than 500GB total per month.

Just one man's opinion.........
Hosting is so cheap these days, I'm not sure how they make any money. If you like to fiddle around with computers and networks and are looking for a challenge, then host yourself. Otherwise, look at the green tab at the top of the page labeled "Hosting Solutions."

Many don't make a profit and many are run as hobbies. The game these days is numbers.
I have to agree with everyone's advice here. Doing it on your own is expensive in both time, equipment and frustration. If you have your own equipment, co-locate it or get a modern server and virtualize.
As far as the software your provider owns, ask if they will sell their license to you.

I havent seen anyone ask this question in a long long time.
Save yourself some headache... outsource it.
This isnt like running Rusty and Edies of Event Horizon from the BBS days.

I think you need to ask yourself what your goal is - are you doing this for personal interest/fun? and/or are you maintaining the sites in hopes of making $$?
If making $$ factors in, then doing your own hosting can quickly become a full time activity and a pain in the @$$. Hosting is a cheap expense compared to the cost of being a slave to servers in your house.

Give Colin Bitterfield a call. 678-360-1040. Tell him Judson gave you his number. He has a small ISP and could take in your servers or possibly migrate your sites and data onto one of his boxes.

If your still interested in this, I would give maxprohosting.com a call. I ran into a similar issue and had to move all my sites fast. People over at max pro hosting moved all my sites and I had no down time at all. 877.814.4300 is there number, the guy that helped me move the sites name was Tom i believe. I found it was much much cheaper than trying to do it myself.
Hope everything works out.
