Adult Toy Site Questions |
 |
 |
Hi,
I'm thinking of setting up an adult toy site (mostly vibrators). I have some mainstream sites Wordpress sites I've developed and wanted to explore some of the issues involved in this crossover. I'd probably only be having toy review posts and some general articles, so only pictures of the vibrators would be shown.
o Would an adult toy site require age verification?
o Would an adult toy site have to be 2257 compliant?
o Would I have to worry about federal, state or community obscenity laws? I'm from Massachusetts
o With regards to SEO, what would be my best sources of backlinks?
I'm assuming the usual article backlinks from GoArticles and Ezinearrticles would
not be an option. How about social bookmarking and Web2.0 backlinks?
So, in essence is a generic adult toy affiliate site considered to be pornographic
and what's the best options for doing SEO?
Advice Appreciated
Michael

Welcome to YNOT!
Well... unfortunately some of what you ask for requires a legal opinion.
As far as SEO, YNOT could refer you to someone who has done some work for us in the past.

Just out of curiosity, are you thinking about actually running a store, or will you be using a white label store?

Michael, great idea to use Wordpress. I love it and use it for almost everything.
Depending on the product, you could be either mainstream or adult with this one.
It kind of straddles the line. I think I would go as classy as possible to garner the widest possible audience and potential links.
As far as SEO backlinks go, that is easier said than done.
To get real organic backlinks, it takes extraordinary content which usually takes some resources to produce.
I would add this to the plan, but not get stuck spinning my wheels on it.
Usually a great article with insider info, and interview, scientific info on how they make better vibrators, an interview with a hot chick on how she uses her vibrator, tastefully done, like you might see on a late night HBO special, then you can get meaningful backlinks.
Social bookmarking should be a part of everyone's marketing plan. With this, you can probably use some of the big mainstream social sites, too, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks for the responses UncleGordie and Kevin.

I'll basically setting up a Wordpress reveiw site with affiliate links. I'm not interested in getting into the drop shipping scene and just want to direct my traffic to the major toy store sites.
I should be able to find some experienced adult toy review writers.
I love the idea about doing the insider interview and adding the scientific angle. That keeps the site on the mainstream review versus pornographic side of the fence. I believe the hot chic interview would cross that line.
I believe that I could get some traffic from a Facebook or Twitter or YouTube profile. However, I don't believe there's any SEO benefits since they're nofollow links. I could hunt out for some link exchanges with other toys sites, but I don't think there's much SEO juice in that these days. So, I'm trying to understand how to get some quality one-way dofollow links.
Appreciate the Advice!

What I would do is just get started. I would not let one of the hardest parts of the whole equation stop me in my tracks.
Here is one of my favorite quotes from Seth Godin:
| Quote: | "I am not a perfectionist. I think that I am very focused on doing the best I can quickly and fixing it to make it better. A perfectionist doesn’t do things quickly, it takes them too long to shift."

If I were doing this, I would put up the site and start publishing content. I would increase the quality and quantity of my content as I progressed.
As traffic increased naturally, I would start working on better content and lining up interviews with inventors of different vibs, factory tours, etc.
Act big and you will become big.
Don't think like a webmaster.
Think like you are a producer of a new HBO series on vibrators, and a publisher of a new consumer reports for vibrator users.
That's what I would do.
I would also get my butt to the adult shows, like cybernetexpo.com
I am available for design, consulting and SEO btw.
