How to open a porn store? |
 |
 |
Hello
I'm from Alberta Canada,
I'm wondering what is the best way about opening your porn store and how much $$$ would you say is required to open a store.
I got money and would like to open on in my city.
Everything from
Videos
Toys
clothing
and so on.
Thanks

I'd focus on online retail. Most porn consumers like the anonymous buying benefits, especially with google maps taking pictures of everyone now nearly everywhere, LoLz. I plan on opening a online store that is focused on primarily digital distribution on digital content from the adult biz.

Many U S adult stores are part of chains. You sound like you've never sold anything. I know there are also Canadian chains-I would strongly recommend tracking them down and trying to partner on a new store. Their expertise will be needed to keep ahead of the law and to be profitable. Because of the nature of the Adult biz there is a whole lot of stuff besides retailing you need to know. Either you need to get a job as a store manager and work a couple of years, hire a top pro or partner with a chain. You can get very screwed separately from losing your money.

I was the director of operations over four adult stores in South Carolina for a number of years. I know adult retail inside and out.
Your first step... become familiar with your local zoning laws. I don't know about Canada, but here in the US most cities of any size have developed strict guidelines as to where you can open an adult store. In my city adult stores can only open for business in areas zoned as heavy industrial.
You also need to pay very close attention to your city's legal definition of what, exactly, defines a store as adult. Here in Charleston, your store is considered adult if your total inventory is comprised of more than 15% adult material.
To get around our local zoning laws (so we can open a store in areas zoned for general business) we set up a non-adult area at the front of the store and fill it to the rafters with cheap, non-adult merchandise. What has worked well for us is buying used DVDs in bulk, because you can get them cheap and you can stuff a million of them in a very small amount of space. You then name and market your store as a "DVD exchange" where people can bring in their own used DVDs and swap them 2 for 1. It works great, and makes your non-adult inventory completely self sustaining. Once you have the front set up you can then pretty much ignore that aspect of the business and focus on your adult area... which is run out of the back room.
Your largest initial expense will be stocking your adult section. Find yourself a good wholesale distributor who will work with you on pricing and negotiate a deal to have them stock your entire adult room. A potential sale of that size will have them falling all over themselves to make you a great deal and win your business. Don't EVER just accept their advertised prices on anything. Negotiate every single purchase, no matter how small. Trust me, they will make you a good deal... if you insist on it.
A couple good US distributors that I've done business with are AA Video and Southeastern Sales. For mags and mag-packs, Miami Books.
My best piece of advice for running an adult store... hire good people and pay them well.
We paid our clerks a decent base salary along with a 4% commission on their sales. We had clerks who were making $30/hr during the busy summer tourist season. That sounds like a lot to pay a porn clerk, but our employee turn-over rate was zero, and they made us three million dollars a year in revenue. They were good, loyal employees who were worth every penny we paid them.
If you live in a conservative town, I also know quite a few inside tricks for keeping your doors open... since the town will undoubtedly try its' best to close you down. I won't list those here because they're... sneaky. Fully legal, but sneaky... and they work.
If you want to discuss more... drop me a line.

First you need to contact your Country Adult Store operators, so that they will guide you. If not make a partnership with them, once you know all in & outs then you can start your own adult store without partnership.
As i know Mallcomare the one of the best in Adult Products. Why don't you contact for partnership, they are very good and helpful for your adult business.

Alberta has a city? When did that happen?
Seriously, though--why do you want to do this? Have you done market research? Legal research? What kind of ROI are you expecting? Are you looking to service the local population, or open something along a highway to service truckers?
Do you have experience with retail?

i agree, why would you want to open a retail store when the chains have taken over that sector of the porn industry? I don't think it would be a good financial move no matter what part of the world you live in.

If you need to ask such a basic question you need to ask yourself why are you thinking of this?
Invest your money in a business you know well.

Why don't you have a tie up with adult industry leaders.
Who can give customer support also.
