    Opportunities on Linked In

I get hit up quite often from people looking for jobs and I encourage anyone to join various groups on Linked In as there are always opportunities there. Technical, marketing... on it goes...

    I'll second this..

I get a good number of offers to join coding projects on Linked In. They are looking for you and I don't even search them out and I get offers. I imagine that with any kind of thought out effort toward freelancing or even getting hired, just about anyone can pick up paying work provided they know what they are doing.

I hear the same thing from everyone, but it ain't workin' at all for me. I don't push myself on linkn enough, so that's one reason. But similarly no one is finding me or friending me either. All the jobs that are sent to me I'm under-qualified for, conversely I have a close friend who's not a social media darling at all, and he's got a ton of followers, perhaps because he's a photographer.

I'd love to see it work for me, not a lot, just a little, 'cause I seriously need some opportunities to head my way. I'm seeing a lot of people on there that I haven't seen in a very long time, some I've friended, some I don't want to travel down that road again.

Any tips you can offer to make myself more popular, please share them, my dance card isn't filling up at linkn...

Never stop networking... it's tiring but it pays off. You've got a great sense of humor and a shit ton of life experiences. Not to mention you are the go-to tranny guy and the go-to NYC guy (for me at least). All of that shit is phenomenally interesting and can get you a lot of mileage.

I'm fortunate to have you as a friend, that I never take for granted. But I'm really just a guy that can tell a couple of jokes at a cocktail party, then buy a round or two. I only play a genius on TV, in real life I'm just a rogue from the West Side. But you're right, I can work a queen over quicker than she can try the cock-squeeze pocket-pick.

I have actually been trying to beef up my profile, however my self image is not as regal as when I promote others. I look like the guy you wouldn't buy a used Dodge from, in fact I used the pic I took of myself standing on the corner inspecting pedicures before the summer ends. Nobody pays no mind 'cause I'm just another big city crazy....

Anyhow, I'll get it together, one reason is because I need to. Oh and by the way, when you do make it back to the big city, leave some time on your schedule so I can take you on a tour of my neighborhood, I always envisioned us swilling together.

Would love to meet up with you man. I'm actually going to be in Long Island in Nov. for a wedding. Nassau county. I know it's many hops skips and jumps away from the city but figured I'm mention this just in CASE I'm able to get away for a few hours.

Nassau's less than an hours ride on the LIRR, 45 mins depending. I'm just a couple blocks from Penn Station where the train would bring you, so a few of hours would get us dinner and a drink or three. You'll have to clear it with wifey though...

I understand your time will be limited, let me know, I could surely jump on the train if only for a breakfast or lunch quickie.

Do y'alls have both "mainstream" and "adult" Linkedin accounts, or just mash it into one dea, or are you sufficiently vague with the public info anyway?

My Linked In is primarily mainstream. I include adult but don't call so much attention to it.

My account is under 'Clark Kent' mild mannered reporter by day for the Daily News, strictly commercial profile. I've found so many people I haven't seen or had contact with for a very long time, some I've reconnected with, others I don't see much of a point. Not getting many requests if any from my colleagues from long ago, largely because I think many have set up profiles but don't bother with them, then probably I'll guess that my thinking holds true with people that see me, probably a why bother approach.

My profile isn't great, I'm very under-qualified for the positions I'd like to have, and just in general not establishing any type of "networking" relationships at all. Either I'm a bigger prick than I thought, not all that interesting, or simply not donning my cap and utility belt enough to soar across the sky and make people go "is it a bird? is it a plane?...."

Yeah hk, that's been kinda my experience with it all - bunch of people on there who I had tenuous connections with, but not much movement in the way of realistic opportunities or anything. That's why I was surprised LAJ & m-d talked it up here, made me wonder if I should give it a second look.

I've been hearing this from several people, which is primarily why I'm trying to start developing a more sound profile. One of my closest friends is a top photographer here in NY, his love has been shooting blues musicians and he does the covers and on site work for two major magazines. However that is not his day job, more of a labor of love, he does corporate work to pay the bills. His work is brilliant and so it's not unusual at all that people in his field would gravitate towards him. Anyhow, Joe had zero social media experience or interest, yet wanted to nudge his personal work and on line presence up a notch or two. At one of his parties earlier in the year I was standing with him and one of his friends, a girl I didn't know, she was telling us how joining Linkedin got her work almost instantly. Subsequently Joe took her advice, though he asked me to help him get set up on different networks, he joined Lnkn and has been going gang busters. He's got a ton of endorsements, and making a lot of connections.

So the point of that story I'll say is, there are a ton of photographers in NY, I'll assume his industry has helped him gain a big presence. Cause knowing Joe, he's only still going to do but so much of his own promotion.

Really I think it matters what it is you do. PHP always seams to be in demand. Perl and other *nix interpreted server languages are even more so. You guys would need to play your strengths card. The experience factor. The contacts you have. Your both distinct guys in your fields of expertise. But being web guys, would you lend your talents to the competition?

Yeah, the "what you do" is key.

Photography is easy to present on a site like that, and if it's quality it'll immediately speak for itself. Coding jobs are straightforward in that 'client needs such & such work done, puts out feelers' works good in an online setting.

For my mainstream work - 'marketing & design consultant' or 'project facilitator', well it's just not something that the Linkedin community is clamoring for, nor is it something that presents well on that social media format. Not like photography.

My adult work's different, which is why I asked who includes that in their portfolio. Much as I'd like I can't mingle the two, just not worth the risk re my mainstream clients. Though I might do a focus on my vintage archives (all of it, not just the adult stuff), again the demand for that on Linkedin is questionable
